Anthropic Investors: Valuation Breakdown Ahead of IPO
Key venture capital partners and early backers stand to gain billions in equity as the AI lab prepares for its public debut this year.

Anthropic is positioning itself for a historic public listing later this year, with expectations pointing toward a valuation of up to $2 trillion. This move is set to create significant financial windfalls for the company’s extensive network of early-stage and later-stage investors. Even before the official stock exchange debut, the stakes held by prominent venture capital firms and individual backers already represent billions of dollars in value, based on the company’s most recent private market assessment of $965 billion.
The financial magnitude of these holdings is evident when examining the specific portfolios of key stakeholders. According to data from Bloomberg, the current private valuation places the total holdings of major backers in the multi-billion dollar range. This valuation serves as a baseline for understanding the potential upside that the upcoming IPO may deliver, offering a snapshot of the current wealth distribution among those who funded the AI lab’s growth.
Among the most notable holders is Eric Schmidt, the former CEO of Google. Schmidt entered the Anthropic ecosystem during its Series A round in 2021, a period when the startup was valued at just $461 million. His early commitment has since matured into a holding of approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, this modest percentage translates to a stake worth nearly $10 billion, underscoring the dramatic appreciation of the asset over the last half-decade.
Institutional investors have also seen substantial returns, particularly those who made large-scale bets in the later stages of the company’s development. Iconiq, an investment firm, committed $6 billion to Anthropic last year when the company was valued at $183 billion. That position has already grown to $17 billion and is projected to potentially double in value upon the IPO. Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D round, has invested more than $1 billion in total, a stake now valued at $14 billion.
Sequoia Capital, a prominent name in the tech investment world, made its first investment in Anthropic earlier this year. The firm entered at a valuation of $380 billion with a $3 billion check, securing roughly 1% ownership. This entry point means the investment has already more than doubled in value in a short timeframe. Additionally, Spark Capital, the only venture firm known to hold a board seat, invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C when the company was valued at $5 billion. That position has since ballooned by more than ninetyfold to a current value of $7 billion.
Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also holds a significant position. The firm initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round and subsequently added another $400 million to its commitment. Although Kutcher departed Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm, the stake held by the original entity is now worth billions. These figures illustrate the intense financial stakes involved for those who backed Anthropic during its critical growth phases.
The stakes for these investors are high as the company navigates the path to its public debut. The disparity between the entry valuations and the current private market prices highlights the explosive growth of the AI sector. For the backers listed, the upcoming IPO represents not just a liquidity event, but a validation of the strategic bets made on Anthropic’s technology and leadership. The market will closely watch how the final public pricing compares to these private valuations.
